Von’s Vision Center

Event Information

Event Dates: September 18; October 23; November 20 (CANCELLED)

Event Time: 10am-4pm (September & November); 8am-1pm (October)

Event Location: A.P. Beutel Health Center (Basement, Room 027)

Students must pre-register for the event. Registration for each event will open approximately two weeks prior to the event date. Registration and additional event information can be found at https://www.vonmiller.org/page/exam-day-texas-am-university .

Items to Bring

Personal Identification (only one needed):

  • TAMU Student ID (preferred)
  • Government-Issued ID (Driver’s License; Passport)

Event Eligibility Form:

  • Financial Aid Award Letter (accessible via TAMU Financial Aid portal; bring printed copy or photo of 2019-2020 Award Letter)

What to Expect Day-Of

Arrival: When you arrive at SHS, look for the Von’s Vision Center signage to lead you down to the event location. Signage will be near each first floor entrance, as well as when you arrive on the basement level. Check-in for the event will be hosted in the basement, room 027 (southeast side of the A.P. Beutel Health Center).

Check-In: Please arrive for your appointment time at least 15 minutes in advance. You will be asked to show a form of personal identification as well as the event eligibility form.

Examination: The entire paperwork and examination process will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. You will be meeting with an optometrist/optometry assistant during the examination process, and will then be led to a kiosk where you will be able to pick out a frame for your glasses. You will not receive any glasses on the day of the event, as they have to be customized based on your prescription specifications. You will receive a copy of your prescription following your examination.

Post-Examination: Once the examination process is complete and you have picked out your frames, you are welcome to exit the building. Your prescription will then be sent to a lab where your new prescription will be filled. You do not have to check-out after utilizing the event.

Volunteers: This event can only be possible with the help of student volunteers. While SHS staff are present to assist with this event, a large number of individuals assisting with operations are student volunteers as well as community optometry staff. Every volunteer signs a confidentiality statement prior to assisting with this event. If at any time you feel uncomfortable with the volunteers helping at this event, please notify a SHS staff member and/or Healthy Ag Ambassador during the event.

Post-Event

Glasses Pick-Up: After your prescription has been filled at a partner facility, the glasses will then be sent back to Student Health Services within 3-4 weeks following the event. When these arrive in the clinic, you will be contacted via the email you provided when you registered for the event. This email will specify pick up days, times, and the location within the health center.

During pick-up, minor adjustments to your frames can be made by SHS staff members.
