Immunization Information for Prospective International Students

Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination Information
In May 2011, the Texas State Legislature passed SB 1107, effective immediately, requiring all entering students under the age of 30 at public and private institutions of higher education to provide evidence of vaccination against bacterial meningitis or a signed affidavit declining the vaccination. The Office of Admissions is coordinating the documentation process for immunization requirements. Please submit your proof of vaccination directly to Admissions.

This requirement applies to all first-time or transfer students beginning January 2012. The law does not apply to students 30 years of age or older or students who are only distance learners (online).

Tuberculosis Screening
Tuberculosis (TB) screening (by questionnaire, skin and/or blood testing) is required for all incoming, high-risk students, domestic or international, who have recently (within past five years) arrived from or traveled to one or more of the countries listed here where TB is endemic. Many students complete the TB screening once they arrive at Texas A&M.

Texas A&M University Policy Requires:

  • Tuberculosis screening must be done within 12 months of enrollment.
  • Students with a prior BCG immunization STILL REQUIRE tuberculosis screening.
  • Tuberculosis screening (PPD) results MUST be recorded in NUMBER and MM.
  • Once a Tuberculin skin test is positive or history of BCG, students should have an IGRA TB test.
  • Chest x-rays MUST have been done in the UNITED STATES and within 12 months of enrollment.

This information can be recorded on our Tuberculosis Screening Form. In addition to the form, please include the original test result document.

Detailed information about screening and treatment for tuberculosis can be found at the following website: http://www.cdc.gov/tb/

Other Immunizations
International students should review the recommended adult immunizations and recommended adult immunization schedule, as well as the TB Screening information located in the link above.

All of the recommended vaccines are available to students at Student Health Services. If you have any questions regarding recommended vaccines, please contact Student Health Services at 979-458-8345.

You are welcome to continue to submit immunization records voluntarily in order to assure the availability of a more complete medical record while you are a student at Texas A&M University.

Immunization Deficiency Holds
Newly admitted international students automatically have an immunization deficiency hold placed on their account. The hold is removed once the appropriate documentation and/or test results have been provided to SHS. The immunization deficiency hold will keep you from registering for classes, but does not affect your VISA, immigration status, admission to Texas A&M, or ability to participate in the new student conference.

International Student Insurance
International students are required to have health insurance as well as evacuation and repatriation coverage.  International Student Services (ISS) is responsible for verification.  Click here for information regarding international student insurance. For more information regarding TAMU insurance, please visit the insurance page on the SHS website.
